The mechanics
What's happening
Neptune square your Ascendant
Neptune dissolves whatever it touches: it softens, blurs, idealizes and lets go. It brings imagination, compassion and longing, and the fog in which it is hard to see what is real. Your Ascendant is your rising sign: how you meet the world, your body and appearance, and in Whole Sign astrology the doorway to your first house and every house after it.
A square puts the transiting planet ninety degrees from your natal point: the two drives cross at right angles, and the friction forces a change. Squares are the transits that make things happen, usually through a problem. Here the transiting Neptune makes a square to your natal Ascendant, so Neptune's drive meets how you meet the world at that angle. Neptune runs a 165-year cycle, so each angle to this point happens once, if at all.

How long it lasts
Brace, or build?
Neptune takes about fourteen years per sign, so a transit to one point lasts about two years across up to five passes. It is felt as a slow season rather than an event: a year of fog, a year of clearing.
