The great dissolution

Neptune moved through Pisces from April 4, 2011 to January 26, 2026. This essay sets that transit beside English-book language through 2022, beside the left, the right and the arts, and against Neptune's previous pass, in 1847–1862.

The transit

Neptune in its own sign

Neptune takes about 165 years to circle the zodiac, so it spends a little under 14 years in each sign and reaches any one sign about once a lifetime. Pisces is the twelfth sign, the last before the wheel begins again at Aries, and the one modern astrology gives to Neptune itself. The tradition, which predates Neptune’s discovery, gives Pisces to Jupiter. Both readings meet in the same place: Pisces is where edges soften, where categories run into one another, where belief, compassion and confusion are hard to tell apart.

Neptune first stepped into Pisces on April 4, 2011, turned back into Aquarius on August 5, 2011 and settled in on February 3, 2012. Three times between November 26, 2015 and September 10, 2016, Saturn stood square to it from Sagittarius: the tradition’s test of an ideal against the world as it is. On April 12, 2022 Jupiter met Neptune at 23°59′ Pisces, the midpoint of the transit in spirit if not in time, and the first such meeting in Pisces since 1856.

The exit took 10 months. Neptune touched Aries on March 30, 2025, slipped back on October 22, 2025 and left Pisces for good on January 26, 2026. Saturn met it on the other side, on February 20, 2026 at 0°45′ Aries. From first touch to final exit the pass lasted 14.8 years.

Those are the facts the ephemeris gives. The rest of this essay asks a harder question: if Neptune in Pisces means what the tradition says, should its 15 years leave a mark in the record? It looks in three places: the words people printed, the events on either side of politics and in the arts, and the last time Neptune made the same pass.

The record

What the words did

Before any data was fetched, this essay fixed a basket of words and committed to reporting every one of them, whatever it did. Four belong to what the tradition would call Neptune’s therapeutic register: “self-care”, “trauma”, “mindfulness” and “wellness”. Three belong to belief and its confusions: “conspiracy theory”, “misinformation” and “gaslighting”. Two are aesthetic: “lo-fi” and “nostalgia”. And two are controls, “committee” and “weather”, chosen as words the transit had no reason to touch.

In English books, eight of the nine words were printed more often in the years Neptune spent in Pisces (2013–2022) than in the years before it arrived (2000–2010). “Mindfulness” rose 5.4 times over. “Gaslighting”, almost absent before, rose 25 times over. The exception was “lo-fi”, which went the other way.

That looks like a pattern, and it should be read with three cautions. First, several of the words were already climbing before Neptune arrived: “mindfulness” had risen 4.4 times over between 2000 and 2010. Second, the biggest one-year jump for “self-care”, “wellness”, “misinformation” and “gaslighting” came in 2021, the year Jupiter closed in on Neptune, but 2021 was also the second year of a pandemic, which is the plainer explanation. Third, the controls did not sit still. “Weather” held roughly level, at 1.1 times its earlier rate, but “committee” fell to 53% of its earlier rate. Word rates drift for reasons of their own, and a single rising line in a single corpus is weak evidence of anything.

What survives the cautions is a shape: the vocabulary of inner life, of trauma and care, and the vocabulary of doubted truth, of conspiracy and manipulation, both grew through the transit. The tradition would read that as Neptune’s signature. A historian would name other causes, and the two accounts don’t exclude each other.

Method and sources
Books
Google Books Ngram Viewer, English corpus, 2000–2022, no smoothing; fetched October 14, 2026. A word’s rate is its share of all words printed that year. Hyphenated words are queried as Google tokenises them (“self - care”).
Index
Words differ in how common they are, so each series is divided by its own mean over the period: 100 is that word's average, 200 is twice it. Compare shapes, not heights between words.
Before and during
A year counts as before or during only if Neptune spent all of it on one side of the line. Years in which it crossed into Pisces or back out are left out of the comparison.
Why no correlation
Two series that both trend over the same 15 years correlate whether or not they have anything to do with each other, and there is only one transit to test. So the plates show shape and timing against dated contacts, beside two control words, and give no coefficient.
Positions
Swiss Ephemeris 2.10.03, with the same data files Danu's charts read. Geocentric positions, tropical zodiac; dates in UTC.

Politics and art

Left, right and art

If Neptune in Pisces describes a climate rather than a cause, the climate should show on every side at once. Plate 2 takes four windows of the transit and puts one dated event from the left, one from the right and one from the arts in each, chosen by a single rule: inside the window, covered by at least two major outlets, datable to the month.

Read down the columns and a likeness appears. On the left, the movements of these years were often leaderless and assembled in the open: an occupied park in 2011, open assemblies in a Paris square, an elected convention writing a country’s founding law from a blank page. On the right, the movements pushed back against large arrangements they saw as dissolving national or personal control: eurozone bailouts, membership of the European Union, vaccine mandates and, by 2025, parts of the federal government itself. In the arts, the pull was toward haze, memory and the immaterial: a ballad first shared as a homemade video, a series built from another decade, a work of art sold with no object attached. By the exit, the most-watched film in Netflix’s history was about singers who fight back.

The tradition would read both political columns as Neptune’s: one side dissolving structure by choice, the other resisting a dissolution it saw coming from outside. The matrix does not say which side was right, and Neptune doesn’t either. It shows the reading applied to both by the same rule.

A game

The blind test

If the themes of these 15 years belonged to Neptune in Pisces alone, they should be easy to date. Plate 3 tests that on you. It describes eight films, albums and series in one line each, all of them about dreams, memory or divided selves. Half were released in the 16 years before Neptune reached Pisces and half while it was there.

It is a game, not evidence: the eight were picked by hand, and the descriptions were written to give nothing away. But it makes the point the record makes. Dissolving selves and dream logic were on screens and records long before 2011. What changed, if anything changed, was how far the themes travelled.

The previous pass

The first pass since Neptune’s discovery

Neptune was last in Pisces from April 26, 1847 to February 14, 1862, a pass of 14.8 years. It had only been discovered in September 1846, the autumn before it arrived. The two passes share their outline: a first step, a step back, a settling in, three Saturn squares, one meeting with Jupiter, then an exit spread over 10 months. The rhythm inside differs. In the 1850s the Saturn squares came halfway through and Jupiter after them; in the 2010s the squares came early and Jupiter late. Saturn met Neptune three times in 1846, in Aquarius, just before the first pass began; this time it met Neptune in Aries, just after the pass ended.

The first pass opened with chloroform and spirit rapping. In November 1847, months after Neptune first touched Pisces, James Young Simpson first used chloroform to put a patient to sleep. In March 1848, in a farmhouse in upstate New York, the Fox sisters said a spirit was answering them in knocks, the episode later taken as the start of modern Spiritualism. The same year brought revolution in Paris in February 1848 and the Seneca Falls convention in July 1848.

The newspapers of the time, as the Library of Congress has digitised them, give the clearest result in this essay. “Spiritualism” barely appears before the pass, at 0.15 pages per thousand. It takes off in 1852, peaks in 1855 and averages 9.1 pages per thousand while Neptune is in Pisces. By 1861, the year Neptune first crossed into Aries, it had fallen to less than a seventh of its peak.

The fit is partial, and the rest of the basket keeps it honest. “Spiritualism” climbed again after the war and was back near its peak by 1870, with Neptune in Aries. “Mesmerism”, the older word for unseen forces, peaked in 1843, before the pass, and fell to about a fifth of its earlier rate during it, as if one vocabulary for the invisible gave way to another. “Clairvoyant” rose to four times its earlier rate and kept rising after the pass, peaking in 1867. The controls moved least: “committee” to 1.1 times and “weather” to 1.3 times its earlier rate.

The first pass closed with war. The Confederate bombardment of Fort Sumter began on April 12, 1861; Neptune entered Aries the next day. The timing is striking and means nothing on its own. It is the kind of date that makes the tradition memorable and makes care necessary.

Swiss Ephemeris 2.10.03, with the same data files Danu's charts read. Geocentric positions, tropical zodiac; dates in UTC.
Newspapers
Library of Congress, Chronicling America: digitised US newspaper pages, 1840–1870; fetched October 14, 2026. A word’s rate is the pages that contain it per thousand pages digitised that year.
Caveats
The text was read by machine from old print, so some words are missed and some are misread. Far fewer pages survive from the 1840s than from the 1860s, so the early years are noisier, and the collection is American: the 1848 revolutions in Europe appear only as US papers reported them.
Why no correlation
Two series that both trend over the same 15 years correlate whether or not they have anything to do with each other, and there is only one transit to test. So the plates show shape and timing against dated contacts, beside two control words, and give no coefficient.

The honest part

What this is not

This is one transit and one earlier pass. Two cases can’t establish a cause, and nothing here claims one. The words that rose had other reasons to rise, some were rising before Neptune arrived, one of the controls moved more than most of the basket, and “lo-fi” did nothing the reading would lead you to expect. The matrix is twelve events chosen by a rule, not a sample of 15 years. The blind test is a game.

What the essay does claim is narrower. The planetary dates are exact. The record, read beside them, shows a vocabulary of the inner life and of doubted truth growing through the transit, and in the 1850s a vocabulary of spirits rising and falling with the earlier pass. Astrology reads that as Neptune’s signature. The math is exact. The interpretation is Danu’s.

Where Pisces closes and Aries opens

Neptune was in Pisces for everyone, but Pisces falls in a different house of each chart. Its house is the part of your life where the last 15 years dissolved and remade things, often quietly. Neptune has now moved into the next sign, and the next house, where it stays until March 23, 2039.

Common questions

Questions, answered

What is the great dissolution?

This essay's name for Neptune's pass through Pisces, from April 4, 2011 to January 26, 2026. Pisces is the sign modern astrology gives to Neptune itself, and the tradition reads Neptune as the planet of dissolving edges: between people, between facts and feelings, between one category and the next.

Did Neptune in Pisces cause what happened in those years?

This essay makes no such claim. It sets one transit beside dated records and reports what lined up and what didn't. With one transit and one earlier pass to compare, no pattern in the record could show a cause, and some of the words that rose were already rising before Neptune arrived.

When did Neptune leave Pisces?

It first crossed into Aries on March 30, 2025, stepped back into Pisces on October 22, 2025 and left for good on January 26, 2026. It stays in Aries until March 23, 2039.

How does this affect my chart?

Through the houses. The house that holds Pisces in your chart is the part of life Neptune moved through from 2011, and the house that holds Aries is the part it has entered. Plate 5 works them out from your rising sign.
