Choose the meaning, then the format

Birth chart art or a star map?

Choose birth chart art for a person's natal astrology: planetary placements, their relationships and a symbolic reading. Choose a star map to commemorate the stars associated with a place and moment. Both can mark a birth. They do not show the same thing.

The practical comparison

Two ways to commemorate a moment

Birth chart artwork

A natal chart organizes the Sun, Moon and planets in the zodiac for a birth. Planet symbols, signs and degrees carry the information; aspect lines describe angular relationships. With a reliable time and place, the design can also show the rising sign, Midheaven and houses.

Choose it when the recipient enjoys astrology and would value a chart they can return to, not only a beautiful date on the wall. Interpretation adds another layer: a reading of the placements, not a promise about the person's future.

A star map

A star map represents stars and may label constellations for a selected sky view. It suits someone who wants to preserve the sky connected with a birth, wedding or other event without needing an astrological reading.

Check the maker's explanation of the map. Designs differ in projection, orientation, horizon, labels and which objects they include. A decorative constellation pattern is not automatically a calculated sky for your chosen date and place.

The useful distinction is the information, not the circle. Both designs can be circular, minimal or richly annotated. Zodiac signs on a natal diagram are not a tracing of the visible constellation outlines. A chart's connecting lines are not the familiar stick figures of a star map.

A chart you can read, not just recognize

Fictional sample · Danu natal artwork
Fictional Maya natal artwork: zodiac ring, numbered houses and planet symbols beside a placement table, with reflective interpretations below. This is an astrology diagram, not a map of visible stars.
The actual Maya sample from Danu's birth chart artwork listing, reproduced unchanged. It is fictional sample work, not a customer chart or your finished order. Open full size (new tab) to inspect the small labels. The reading key below explains the visual without relying on those labels.

1. The ring locates placements

The outer ring carries zodiac signs. Planet symbols sit around the chart, while the numbered band identifies houses in this known-time sample. The table repeats the placements in words, so you do not have to memorize every symbol.

2. The lines describe relationships

The inner lines belong to the chart's aspect geometry. They connect planetary placements by angular relationship, rather than joining stars into a constellation. The degree and house columns provide more information than a Sun-sign label alone.

3. The prose is a reading of the chart

The lower sections offer gifts to lean into, growth reflections and a closing synthesis. These are symbolic interpretations, not additional astronomical measurements. The sample itself describes them as invitations rather than fixed traits or predictions.

Time, place and honest limits

Personalized should mean more than a name

For a natal chart, record the precision

Supply the actual birth date, birthplace and local birth time, with its reliability. A reliable time can support houses and angles. An approximate recollection is not an exact record; a missing time does not become reliable when a form fills in noon.

Danu's artwork listing describes full possible planetary ranges across the local birth date when time is unknown or approximate, with conditional interpretations where signs can differ. Unsupported houses and angles are omitted. That is the standalone artwork policy, not a claim that the free app uses the same full-day range renderer. The unknown-birth-time guide explains the differences.

For a star map, ask which sky it represents

Sky maps depend on what is being represented. For a local sky at a particular moment, the location, date and time matter. Ask whether the map shows the sky above the horizon, a wider celestial view or a decorative arrangement, and how the maker handles a missing time.

NASA's skywatching guide explains that sky-chart tools use location, date and time, and distinguishes constellations from other familiar star patterns. A calculated map is still not a photograph of that evening's clouds, buildings or viewing conditions.

Before checkout

Check the file as carefully as the design

Digital download or physical delivery?

A framed gallery image can show how a design might look without including a frame. Confirm what you receive, the file format, usable print sizes and aspect ratios, whether printing is your responsibility, and how the finished work arrives. Ask about corrections before ordering if any birth details are uncertain.

Danu's current artwork listing is a made-to-order digital product: five PNG print files for different frame shapes, plus a calculation and uncertainty note. No physical print or frame is included. A person reviews the final files before delivery; it is not an instant download. Check the listing for current delivery terms and print specifications rather than assuming another shop's promises apply.

Will the recipient want to read it?

For an astrology enthusiast, look for legible placements, a clear house-system note and interpretation grounded in that chart. For someone who loves stargazing or wants a quiet record of an event, a star map may be the better fit. If you only know a date, choose a design that is honest about what is missing instead of borrowing a precise time.

For a gift, use birth information the recipient is comfortable sharing. Check the spelling of the display name and which personal details will appear on the artwork. A meaningful keepsake does not need to expose more than its owner wants on the wall.

Your next step

Choose what you want to keep

A captured sky, or a chart to return to

A star map can preserve the setting of a moment. Birth chart art gives you an astrological diagram and, when included, a reading to revisit. Neither needs to pretend to be the other.

If you want more written interpretation rather than wall art, inspect the annotated standalone forecast sample. It is a different product, not something included with this artwork. For the calculation choices behind Danu's charts, read the methodology.
