Mercury retrograde

Mercury retrograde, told straight.

Mercury retrograde is the three or four weeks, about three times a year, when Mercury appears to move backward through the zodiac. It is a review window, not a curse: the time to reread, revisit, and repair, and a bad time to sign, launch, or assume.

Right now

Mercury is direct. The next retrograde runs October 24, 2026 to November 13, 2026, from 21° Scorpio back to 5° Scorpio.

What it is

Why Mercury appears to go backward

The mechanics

Mercury orbits the Sun faster than Earth does. About three times a year it overtakes us on the inside, and for three to four weeks it appears from Earth to move backward against the stars. Nothing changes in the planet; what changes is our angle on it. Astrologically, Mercury is the mind, the message, the deal and the trip, and the retrograde is the stretch when those things ask to be looked at twice.

Each retrograde has a shape: a shadow period of about two weeks before the station, when Mercury first crosses the degrees it will later retrace; the station retrograde, when it appears to stop and turn; the retrograde itself; the station direct; and a second shadow, when it recrosses the same degrees forward. The felt window runs from first shadow to last, roughly nine weeks, with the middle three or four the strongest.

The honest take

What it is not

Superstition, separated from the chart

Most of what is said about Mercury retrograde is superstition dressed as astrology: that technology breaks, that travel fails, that nothing can be started. None of that is in the chart. What is in the chart is a planet of communication retracing its steps, which in practice means the things you did quickly come back for a second look, and the review is usually useful.

The real pattern, visible in anyone's life who tracks it, is not disaster but revision. Old contacts resurface. Plans get revised. The message you sent too fast gets misread. The deal signed in the window gets renegotiated. Treat it as an editing period and it pays; treat it as a reason not to live and it costs you three weeks, three times a year.

The move

What to do, and what not to

Do

  • Reread before you send, reread before you sign, and give any important message a day.
  • Finish, revise and repair: the stalled project, the old draft, the conversation left half-done.
  • Back up what matters and build in travel slack, because the ordinary rate of small errors is enough to be annoying.
  • Let old people and old plans resurface; some of them are the point of the window.

Do not

  • Do not sign a contract you have not read twice, or launch something whose details are still moving, if it can wait.
  • Do not make a permanent decision based on a message that might have been misread; ask instead.
  • Do not blame the planet for your own haste, and do not use it as a reason to stop living for a month.

Common questions

Mercury retrograde, answered

How often is Mercury retrograde?

Three times most years, occasionally four, for about three weeks each time, plus a shadow period of about two weeks on either side. The exact dates for the next few years are on this page, computed from the ephemeris.

Does Mercury actually move backward?

No. Mercury orbits the Sun faster than Earth and periodically overtakes us on the inside; from Earth's angle it appears to reverse against the background stars for a few weeks. The planet never changes direction. The astrology is about our angle on it.

Is it bad to sign a contract during Mercury retrograde?

It is a bad time to sign something you have not read carefully, because the window favors misreadings and renegotiations. A contract you understand and have reviewed twice is fine. The rule is read twice, not never sign.

What is the Mercury retrograde shadow period?

The two or so weeks before the station, when Mercury first crosses the degrees it will later retrace, and the two weeks after the station direct, when it crosses them a third time. Things begun in the first shadow tend to be revised in the retrograde and settled in the second.

Does Mercury retrograde affect everyone the same way?

No. The sign it happens in says what gets reviewed, and the house it falls in for your chart says where. A retrograde across your natal Mercury or Sun is felt much more than one that touches nothing. Danu's chart preview shows where each window lands for you.
